Visual synchrony a ects binding and segmentation in perception

چکیده
The visual system analyses information by decomposing complex objects into simple components (visual features) widely distributed across the cortex [1, 2] When several objects are simultaneously present in the visual eld, a mechanism is required to group (bind) together visual features belonging to each object and to separate (segment) them from features of other objects. An attractive scheme for binding visual features into a coherent percept consists of synchronising the activity of their neural representations [3, 4, 5, 6]. If synchrony plays a major role in binding, one should expect that grouping and segmentation are facilitated in visual displays that induce stimulus dependent synchrony by temporal manipulations. Here we show that visual grouping is indeed facilitated when elements of one percept are presented simultaneously and are temporally separated (on a scale below the integration time of the visual system [7]) from elements of another percept or from background elements. The experimental results indicate that the e ect is due to a global mechanism of grouping caused by synchronous neural activation and not to a local mechanism of motion computation.

Phase synchrony facilitates binding and segmentation of natural images in a coupled neural oscillator network
Synchronization has been suggested as a mechanism of binding distributed feature representations facilitating segmentation of visual stimuli. Here we investigate this concept based on unsupervised learning using natural visual stimuli. We simulate dual-variable neural oscillators with separate activation and phase variables. The binding of a set of neurons is coded by synchronized phase variabl...

متن کاملSynchronized oscillations during cooperative feature linking in a cortical model of visual perception
A neural network model of synchronized oscillator activity in visual cortex is presented in order to account for recent neurophysiological findings that such synchronization may reflect global properties of the stimulus. In these recent experiments, it was reported that synchronization of oscillatory firing responses to moving bar stimuli occurred not only for nearby neurons, but also occurred ...
متن کاملSpike synchrony reveals emergence of proto-objects in visual cortex.
Neurons at early stages of the visual cortex signal elemental features, such as pieces of contour, but how these signals are organized into perceptual objects is unclear. Theories have proposed that spiking synchrony between these neurons encodes how features are grouped (binding-by-synchrony), but recent studies did not find the predicted increase in synchrony with binding. Here we propose tha...
متن کاملBinding in models of perception and brain function.
The development of the concept of feature binding as fundamental to neural dynamics has made possible recent advances in the modeling of difficult problems of perception and brain function. Major weaknesses of past neural modeling (most prominently its inability to work with natural stimuli and its 'learning-time' barrier) have been traced back to improper treatment of the binding issue. Signal...
